Queers of colour have long existed within the cultural and industrial margins of Québec cinema in spite of their limited representation.
Hunt Hoe’s Seducing Maarya (2000) explores the social and sexual dynamics of a South-Asian immigrant family in late 1990s post-Referendum Montréal.It serves as one of the first feature-length films to portray the (multi)cultural struggles of a queer person of colour in Québec.
Virtually lost to the archival margins, CultureQueer will spotlight this important film and it's director in our first Spotlight series in 2025.
